Choose Your Decoupage Paper Type & Weight
I offer four different paper options, so you can choose the one that best suits your project and your level of decoupage experience.
Not sure which one to choose? Don’t worry — here’s a simple guide to help.
18 gsm Mulberry Rice Paper – Fibre Free
This is my finest and most delicate option. It’s ultra-light and translucent, which helps the edges blend beautifully into your project for a very natural, almost seamless finish.
Because it is so fine, it does need a little more care when applying, so I generally recommend this one for experienced decoupage crafters or anyone who is already comfortable working with very lightweight papers.
27 gsm Mulberry Rice Paper – Fibre Free
If you’re new to decoupage, this is a great place to start. It’s stronger and a little more forgiving than the 18 gsm paper, making it easier to position and less prone to wrinkling.
It’s also fibre-free, giving you a lovely smooth finish. A good all-round choice if you want something easy to work with.
25 gsm Mulberry Rice Paper – With Fibres
This paper contains visible natural fibres, giving it that lovely traditional mulberry paper look and adding a little extra texture and character to your finished piece.
It works particularly well for glass decoupage, where the fibres can become a beautiful part of the finished effect, but it can also be used on many other surfaces.
30 gsm Decoupage Tissue Paper
This is the strongest of my four options and is very easy to handle, making it a good choice if you find thinner papers difficult to work with or struggle with wrinkles.
Although it is called tissue paper, please don’t confuse it with a paper napkin. This is specialist decoupage tissue designed specifically for crafting.
Still not sure?
If you’re a beginner, I’d suggest starting with the 27 gsm fibre-free mulberry paper or the 30 gsm tissue paper, as both are easier to handle.
If you love a really fine, blended finish and are confident using delicate papers, try the 18 gsm.
And if you’d like the added character of natural fibres — particularly for glass projects — the 25 gsm mulberry paper is a lovely choice.
